IB Literature Higher Level – Terminology

Assignment #1
- Read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. You may get your own copy or borrow Mr. Lanier's, or read here
- Read In Cold Blood and create a Dialectal Journal - You will use critical thinking skills to determine the author’s purpose and writing strategies.
- Quotation/Passage w/ page# - Write out the entire passage to which you will refer and include the page number from which it came.
- Paraphrase or summarize the passage. It will be helpful to provide the context in which it came. In other words, what is happening before and after this passage as it appears in the text?
- Analyze and React - to the passage in full sentences—not notes. Identify the subject, occasion, and audience for the article. Analyze the passage by discussing WHAT literary devices/rhetorical devices the author uses and WHY he/she uses them. Discuss the author’s purpose for this passage and whether or not bias is present. What impact does the device/passage have on the overall article? Make connections to historical/current events, other pieces of literature, or personal experiences/observations.

IB Literature Higher Level – Terminology
- Directions: Create flash cards (digital or 3x5 index cards) of the terms that you don't know. Place term on the front of the card and definition and an example of the term on the back of the card. Study and internalize definitions over the summer. These are words that should be used daily in our class by you and your peers.
